What is SKY ?

Skills and Career Youth, SKY is a student-led intellectual initiative under the Sheffield Malaysian Student Association (SMSA) that was started initially as a platform to groom one's interpersonal skills. At SKY, we believe that with the right skill set, knowledge and exposure, students can still gain a foothold in this rat race for jobs and pave their own version of success.

SKY comprises two major components which are the Policy Making Competition (PMC) and the Career Empowerment Day (CED). PMC is an open discussion and public policy-making session which enables undergraduates to examine current issues and produce new thoughts on the solution in line with Industrial Revolution 4.0 : The Rise of a Smart Nation. This program is intended to improve the thinking skills of the participants and their capacity to communicate effectively in a group. The second part of SKY is CED which is focused to create employability opportunities of the students to meet the particular needs of employers and job sectors. CED furnishes the undergraduates with employment prospect by engaging with various companies and organizations to prepare them up for forthcoming interviews and career fairs. This occasion will likewise enhance the undergraduates' employability and improve the probability of finding a job after completing their studies.

The two-day event will hold PMC on 23rd March 2019 and CED on 30th March 2019 (CED19 will be conducted a week before UKEC Career Fair thus the date may change). Interactive and thought-provoking activities are incorporated in the programme which is aimed to help the students in building their self-confidence as well as enhancing the necessary skills for securing a job. The association also hopes that the students who take part in the sessions will be aware of their responsibility in building the nation. By the end of this programme, students are expected to acquire the relevant skills that make them more likely to gain employment while having some sense of belonging to our beloved country.

We hope to work towards our vision through our annual main events: Policy Making Competition (PMC) and Career Empowerment Day (CED). Though we are based in UK, we aim to create content and events that are not limited to a certain nationally, level of study or where one is based.

History

In the past, having a degree is synonymous to a smooth change into the working scene, which would probably promise one's variety of success. Nonetheless, times have certainly changed with the apparent increment in intensity among the high number of talented graduates in the job market, a tertiary qualification can never again fill in as the sole essential to graduate employment, not to mention success. At Skills and Career for Youth (SKY), we are trying to help undergraduates in acing the important qualities with a specific end goal to set them up for their future profession. This eagerly awaited program was first started in 2015 by the Sheffield Malaysian Students Association (SMSA) because a stage is required for the advancement of interpersonal skills which numerous new graduates need. All things considered, undergraduates from various courses had taken an interest and benefits by the program throughout the years. This year, SKY 18/19 will be run by a group of 23 committed undergraduates to accomplish our aims and goals and also making successful events.
